About this project

We're strengthening the concrete bridge over Diddah Diddah Creek on Boorhaman East Road, located near the McPhersons Road intersection.

Why is this project being undertaken?

Structural investigations, carried out as part of our bridge asset management program, have identified long-term load capacity issues with the bridge beams and culverts that carry traffic on Boorhaman East Road.

To accommodate current and future traffic loads within acceptable safety factors, our structural engineers have developed designs to strengthen the bridge and upgrade the culverts.

Works will involve the temporary removal of the bridge deck structure to allow the installation of extra supports under the middle of the bridge beams, before they are returned and further strengthened with the addition of a concrete overlay.

We will also replace and increase the capacity of the culverts on the northern side of the bridge and upgrade the road approaches and safety barriers to accommodate the slightly higher deck level.

If these works were not to occur, the bridge load limit would need to be significantly reduced in the long term, which we don't consider a viable option for this important agricultural link road.

How is it being funded?

This project is jointly funded by the Federal Government's Bridges Renewal Program and Council's Capital Work bridge renewal fund.

Funding ContributorAmount
Federal Government – Bridges Renewal Program Grant
$483,314
Indigo Shire Council$120,829
TOTAL$604,143

What is happening and when?

Detailed designs and tender documents will be finalised over the next one to two months, followed by a tender process to select a contractor with works hopefully able to commence in the spring.

What will be the impact of these works?

As the project develops, we will work with the community and businesses to minimise the impact of these works, but it is likely the bridge will need to be temporarily closed to permit works to progress safely and efficiently. Detours will be in place to redirect traffic during this time.
