About this project
We're planning to renew the concrete bridge over Diddah Diddah Creek on Boorhaman East Road, located near the McPhersons Road intersection.
Why is this project being undertaken?
Structural investigations, carried out as part of our bridge asset management program, have identified long-term load capacity issues with the bridge beams and culverts that carry traffic on Boorhaman East Road.
To accommodate current and future traffic loads within acceptable safety factors, options to strengthen the bridge and upgrade the culverts were explored in detail but ultimately an option to fully replace both with a completely new bridge proved to be a more economical, lower risk pathway, with improved outcomes for the waterway area.
If these works were not to occur, the bridge load limit would need to be significantly reduced in the long term, which we don't consider a viable option for this important agricultural link road.
How is it being funded?
This project is jointly funded by the Federal Government's Bridges Renewal Program and Council's Capital Work bridge renewal fund.
Funding Contributor
Amount
Australian Government – Bridges Renewal Program Grant
$588,000
Indigo Shire Council
$147,000
TOTAL
$735,000
What is happening and when?
The tender to design and construct a new bridge to replace the old bridge and culverts was awarded at the September 2024 Council meeting with final designs and project approvals to be actioned over the next few months, with works hopefully able to commence later in the spring.
What will be the impact of these works?
The current expectation, subject to formal approvals, is that a temporary side track and bridge will be installed to accommodate traffic during the replacement to minimise impact to community and businesses. This will require some localised speed reduction but provides a better alternative to a long detour.
