We're constructing a new community play space at the Barnawartha Recreation Reserve.

Why is this project being undertaken?

This project is funded through the Council Support Package - Regional Development initiative, which redistributed resources to regional Victorian towns after the Commonwealth Games cancellation.

The project directly addresses key priorities identified in Barnawartha's resilience plan, which highlighted the community's desire for safe, connected and empowered communities. Through this new space, local young people will be able to thrive in a safe environment.

Through community consultation, the Committee of Management gathered resident input on playground features and location preferences, and it is intended that the space will serve not just people attending sports at the reserve, but also day-to-day locals and visitors to the town.

How is it being funded?

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Heritage Grants program and Council's Capital Works budget.

What is happening and when?

In May 2025, Council officers met with the Commitee of Management to discuss the location of the playground as they envisaged a different space to what was initially in the proposal. We are now waiting for the committee to come back to officers with a potentially new location.

After further meetings with representatives of the Barnawartha Recreation Committee of Management it has been confirmed that the location of the new playground will be as shown on the attached Site Plan, which is in accordance with the approved 2025 Barnawartha Recreation Reserve Master Plan.

A concept plan has been developed and quotations sought for the design and construction of the playground which is to include a cantilever basket swing, a combination play unit, with slide and climbing elements, and a shade sail.

It is expected that the works will be completed during March 2026.

In conjunction with these works, the Committee of Management will proceed with the closure of vehicle access to the reserve from Stanley Street and upgrade the existing access from High Street as the main entry point for game days. This action is also in accordance with the 2025 Barnawartha Recreation Reserve Master Plan.
