The Indigo Shire Library Strategy 2026–2030 has been adopted

Thank you, Indigo Shire — your voice has shaped the future of your libraries.

Following extensive community engagement, including 136 survey responses, three written submissions and 26 visitors to our drop-in sessions, Council has formally adopted the Indigo Shire Library Strategy 2026–2030 at its meeting on 30 June 2026.

Almost 90% of respondents told us the draft Strategy reflected the role they want libraries to play in their community, and that strong mandate is reflected throughout the final document. Many of the changes you'll see below came directly from what you told us during public exhibition.

About the Strategy

The Indigo Shire Library Strategy 2026–2030 sets the long-term direction for Indigo Shire Libraries. It outlines how our services, programs and spaces will evolve to meet the needs of a growing and changing community.

Indigo Shire Libraries have experienced significant growth and change in recent years, with increasing demand for digital support, community programs, study spaces and inclusive services.

Over the past three years, Council has engaged with residents, library members, community groups and young people to understand how library services can best support local needs. This work directly informed the development of the Strategy.

The Strategy responds to broader trends shaping public libraries across Australia, including the growing importance of digital literacy, flexible and multi-use spaces, and the role of libraries as community hubs for connection, creativity and lifelong learning.

What happens next

With the Strategy now adopted, our focus shifts to delivery. Over the coming months you'll see:

  • Staff briefings so our library team can talk you through what's changing
  • A printed summary of the Strategy available at every branch
  • Community consultation beginning on the Rutherglen and Tangambalanga projects
  • Progress on the Beechworth Library Master Plan, including co-design opportunities

We'll keep using the Your Library. Your Future. name and this page to keep you updated as these projects move forward, because this Strategy was built with you, and we want you to see it through with us.
