About this project

We recognise that whilst living near a gravel road can have its attractions, there are issues with dust, rough surfaces, and higher maintenance costs that are not desirable.

We spend a significant proportion of our annual budget on maintaining the existing sealed and gravel road network, which leaves a proportionally small amount left over to fund upgrades of gravel roads to a sealed standard. Significant improvements have been made since we initiated our urban and rural road seal upgrade programs well over a decade ago, but the reality is that upgrades, especially upon the longer rural sections, often need to occur over multiple stages over several years.

In this stage of works we are planning to upgrade approximately 500m of Mahon Lane, to a sealed road standard, from the Racecourse Road end to approximately 30m past #264 Mahon Lane.

This will serve as an initial stage of a project to ultimately upgrade over 1.5km’s of Mahon Lane to the sealed surface between Racecourse Road and just past Fernleigh Close. Works to improve the gravel surface of the balance of Mahon, between Fernleigh Close and Sanatorium Road, have already been completed this summer.

Future Stages

Further works to continue the seal upgrades on Mahon Lane, through to Fernleigh Close, are contingent on the allocation of budgets within future capital works programs and their adoption by us. As priorities and financial circumstances can change each year, we are unable to confirm future allocations at this stage.

What to expect

The seal upgrade scope will initially involve some minor earthworks to roadside embankments, grading of shoulders and drainage works to improve width and water flow, but generally the road formation will not undergo significant alteration. Once the road is shaped suitable road base material will be imported to bring the pavement depth up to the standard where a bitumen seal can be applied to the surface. Any slight changes in finished road level will be smoothly matched into adjoining driveways using whatever the current standard is to your property. Additional upgrades to driveways are not our responsibility or part of this project’s scope.

When this will happen

We have completed project planning over the summer and are planning to complete the works in April/May 2026, starting with some widening and underground drainage works in late April followed by a short gap before the main gravel pavement upgrades and seal application.

How this may impact you

Mahon Lane will remain open to traffic during the works but there will be occasions where short sections will need to be either narrowed to a single lane or fully closed to allow works to be completed safely and efficiently. During these full width closures residents will need to exit, and return to, Mahon Lane via the end of the road still open to them. Our staff will aim to keep any disruption to a minimum and provide some advanced warning with our site message board ahead of the full closures.
