Consultation has concluded
Consultation process
Between late February and April 2023, we invited community feedback on this project via an online survey on our website's Have Your Say section, through a number of community drop in sessions and key stakeholder engagement.
We had a huge response to the survey with over 900 respondents.
We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to provide us with valuable feedback.
Why did we consult?
In 2021, Council adopted a new Domestic Animal Management Plan, and feedback received during the consultation period called for stronger cat management measures, so we sought community input on proposed new cat management initiatives, which included the introduction of a cat curfew and mandatory cat desexing.
This feedback will help Council decide whether to introduce the proposed new cat management measures and how it can support residents and cat owners once a decision is made.
What did we find out?
A record 900 plus survey responses were received indicating strong support for the introduction of a shire-wide 24- hour cat curfew to property boundaries and for the mandatory desexing of cats upon registration.
More than 94% of survey respondents cited the protection of wildlife as the main reason for supporting a curfew, with 55% citing the prevention of trespass and 48% the protection of cats from injury, disease and becoming lost.
What happens next?
At the October 2023 Council meeting, Council endorsed the recommendation to introduce a Shire-wide 24/7 cat curfew and mandatory desexing of cats upon registration.
