Why is Stanley township not in scope?

Stanley Township is in a unique position, as the only township in the Shire that is entirely within the Farming Zone. Because of this, as well as the bushfire risk profile and niche agricultural influence, Stanley Township is being addressed separately, outside of the Settlement Strategy.

A strategic project will commence shortly that recognises the individual opportunities and constraints of the Stanley Township, and seeks to support ongoing township services within Stanley into the future. Many Stanley residents access services via Beechworth and other Indigo townships, and are encouraged to share their feedback on the Settlement Strategy by attending a pop-up session or completing the survey on this page.

How will bushfire risk impact the strategy?

Bushfire risk is of critical importance to guiding growth and development within our Shire.

Protection of human life is prioritised through planning policy, and the consideration of bushfire risk is a key input into settlement planning. The preparation of the Indigo Shire Settlement Strategy will be underpinned by robust bushfire risk assessment, which will assist in the preparation of a Strategy that recognises and celebrates the unique identities of our townships.

The Indigo Shire Bushfire Planning Assessment highlights bushfire risk as a constraint for some of our townships. It commences the conversation around risk prevention, mitigation and management, and provides a platform for supporting sustainable township change in the coming decades.
