We’re inviting community feedback on the Draft Indigo Destination Management Plan 2036 (DMP36).

What is the Destination Management Plan?

The DMP36 is a long-term roadmap for Indigo's visitor economy through to 2036. It builds on the strong foundation of the 2018 to 2023 Tourism Strategy and sets a clear new direction grounded in sustainability and regeneration.

The Plan is centered on a triple bottom line approach:

  1. Economic sustainability
  2. Community sustainability, including socio cultural value and social license
  3. Environmental sustainability

At its heart is the vision, Green Gold Rush. It reimagines the traditional idea of a gold rush, shifting from extraction to regeneration. By 2036, Indigo Shire will be recognised as a global benchmark for the regenerative power of tourism, with a visitor economy contributing $2.5 billion between 2026 and 2036 and catalysing $150 million in targeted regenerative investment.

Why does it matter?

Tourism influences our towns, landscapes and way of life. The DMP36 shifts from traditional growth focused metrics to a more balanced model that supports economic prosperity while protecting the character, heritage and environment that define Indigo Shire.

Community engagement showed strong support for sustainable tourism that creates jobs, strengthens local business, protects natural assets and builds vibrant, connected communities. It also highlighted concerns around parking, infrastructure capacity, environmental impacts and the cost of transition for business. These insights have directly shaped the Plan’s priorities.

How was the Plan developed?

The Draft DMP36 is the result of more than 12 months of robust engagement, with over 480 touch points across surveys, round tables, one on one conversations, community and industry stakeholders, Council advisory committees and regional partners.

The draft has undergone subject matter expert review, peer review by global destination leaders, and circulation to all Traditional Owner groups with an open invitation for ongoing engagement.

This depth of consultation gives us confidence that the Draft DMP36 reflects community aspirations while responding to practical realities.
