What is the Draft Sustainable Council Buildings Policy?

The Draft Sustainable Council Buildings Policy seeks the application of Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles in Council-owned buildings. It will ensure that all Council buildings—new, upgraded, or existing—demonstrate leadership in ESD and resource efficiency.

Why this Policy Matters

Indigo Shire Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has an ongoing commitment to undertake its operations in a manner that supports climate mitigation and adaptation, sustainable procurement and ESD.

Local governments have a critical role in reducing emissions and improving resource efficiency. One of the obvious ways they can achieve this is in how they choose to build, manage and maintain council-owned assets in a changing climate.

The Draft Sustainable Council Buildings Policy provides a holistic approach to deliver greater efficiencies across all council‑owned buildings, with the aim to minimise environmental impact, improve climate resilience, and ensure responsible long-term investment in community infrastructure.

Key objectives of the Draft Sustainable Council Buildings Policy

The Draft Sustainable Council Buildings Policy aims to ensure that Council-owned buildings, whether new or existing, are climate ready and energy efficient. This approach will support the following outcomes:

  1. Climate Resilience: Council buildings being designed and operated to better withstand climate-related hazards, including bushfire, extreme heat, flooding, storms and prolonged power outages.
  2. Improved energy performance through improved energy efficiency and increased renewable energy generation and storage.
  3. Greater resilience to rising utility costs by enhancing the energy and water efficiency of Council‑owned buildings and facilities.
  4. Reduced waste generation and increased recycling and resource recovery during construction and demolition activities.
  5. Enhanced biodiversity conservation in and around Council-owned buildings.
  6. Strengthened corporate responsibility and environmental leadership by demonstrating and promoting sustainable building design to the community.

The Draft Sustainable Council Buildings Policy aligns with the following key documents:

  • Community Engagement Policy
