We’re seeking community feedback on our Draft Councillor Professional Development Policy.
As part of recent reforms to the Local Government Act 2020 and the Local Government (Governance and Integrity) Regulations 2020, all councils are now required to adopt and implement annual Councillor Professional Development.
This policy sets out how Indigo Shire Council will support the training and ongoing development of our Councillors to ensure they are well-equipped to serve the community effectively and transparently.
The policy aims to:
Strengthen good governance through high-quality learning and development;
Ensure Councillors understand and fulfil their legislative, ethical, and representative responsibilities; and
Promote ongoing capability building across each Council term through structured, flexible, and accessible training programs.
It outlines the mandatory training required including annual professional development, induction for newly elected Councillors, and specific training for Mayors and Deputy Mayors. It describes how training will be delivered, monitored, and certified.
We invite you to review the draft policy and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help ensure the policy reflects the expectations and values of our community.
Submissions on the draft policy can be emailed to info@indigoshire.vic.gov.au. Feedback closes 5pm, Tuesday 20 August 2025.
All submissions will be considered before the policy is finalised and presented to Council for adoption in September 2025.
