We’re seeking community feedback on our Draft Community Engagement Policy.

What is the Community Engagement Policy?

The Community Engagement Policy sets out how Indigo Shire Council will engage with our community on decisions that affect you. It establishes the principles, processes and commitments that guide how we involve residents, ratepayers, business owners and stakeholders in Council's decision-making.

The policy ensures that community engagement is meaningful, inclusive and transparent, giving you genuine opportunities to influence Council decisions on services, policies, strategies and projects.

Background

Under the Local Government Act 2020, Council is required to adopt and maintain a community engagement policy. This updated policy replaces our 2021 policy.

The policy follows the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) framework, which provides a spectrum of engagement from simply informing the community through to empowering community-led decision making.

Key Features

The updated policy includes:

  • Clear principles for when and how we engage
  • Commitments to inclusive engagement, particularly for people who may face barriers to participation
  • Specific recognition of Traditional Owner engagement protocols
  • Minimum timeframes to ensure adequate opportunity for participation
  • Clear feedback mechanisms so you know how your input influenced decisions
