Creative Indigo Arts and Culture Strategy
At its March 2023 meeting, Council adopted a new arts and culture strategy, Creative Indigo 2023-2027, to promote creativity, innovation, and community engagement throughout our region.
Our vision for our community:
Indigo Shire is one of Victoria's critical creative hubs, where arts are embedded in the way we do things and used to improve the lives of everyone.
About the Creative Indigo 2023-2027 Strategy
Our lives are enriched by arts and culture. They are an integral part of our stories, create a sense of belonging, and broaden our understanding of the world. Through arts and culture, we can explore new ideas and ways of thinking, and develop our capacity to tackle the challenges we face, creating the future we envision for our region.
In the Creative Indigo Strategy, we have articulated our collective vision for the cultural life of the Shire. This strategic plan will guide the allocation of Council resources and efforts, identifying key priorities for the next five years.
We recognise the numerous benefits a thriving creative community delivers to our region - from improved health and wellbeing, to increased economic and cultural opportunities. Indigo is fortunate to be home to a diverse and vibrant community of artists and cultural practitioners, and this strategy aims to support their growth and success, unlocking the creative potential of our region.
Building Creative Indigo
It’s been 12 months since Council adopted its first ever arts and culture strategy, Creative Indigo, and we’re excited to share some of the progress we’ve made over the year.
Highlights include:
Tiny Art Show – our Shire-wide community art show exhibited in our libraries. More than 180 community members aged between three years old right up to those in their 90’s participated, and we’re thrilled to say it will be back again in 2024
- Public Mural Project – rolling public art program delivered through the Chiltern Community Hub
- Grant programs and event support valued at $80,000 to support events that contribute to the creative vibrancy of the Shire
- Creative Libraries – fully booked creative workshops linking intergenerational artist with our community
- NAIDOC Week events - Youth event in Rutherglen promoting local First Nations Performers and a screening of LORE in Yackandandah

Regional Youth Creative Industry Launchpad. Mentorship program for people aged 16 to 27
Participants will:
- Be paired with a mentor who is a practicing artist or creative industries person working in Regional NSW
- Work with their mentor to co-design their program according to their needs and goals throughout 2024
- Receive a stipend of $750 just for participating in this project. Approved travel expenses and associated material costs will also be covered.
- Work on a collective showcase that addresses pressing issues for regional young people through collaborating with the 75 other participants.
Applications open now and close Monday 6 November, for those in the Murray Arts Footprint (NSW & VIC)

Maggie Rigby from iconic Melbourne folk band The Mae’s, launches her new solo project debut EP ‘Best Love in the Universe’ at the Old Stone Hall, proudly part of her headline Australian Tour.
Come and join us for an intimate evening of live music, Maggie will charm us in the beautiful space of the Old Stone Hall with her stunning spine-tingling vocals, her intricate songwriting playing on guitar, banjo, marimba and percussion.

Beechworth Arts Council Members embrace the spirit of inclusion in COLOUR – a group exhibition of visual art at The Empire Hotel Art Gallery, 03 November through to 02 December
COLOUR promises a celebration of art across a range of mediums, to echo the spirit of open hearted inclusion and diversity as seen in the Rainbow flag and LGBTIQ community. This is an open exhibition with all members of Beechworth Arts Council welcome to submit their artwork for show.

The Friends of the Burke Museum, Inc. and the Albert & Barbara Tucker Foundation are offering, for the first time, the Ian Jones Award, valued at $2,000.
The Ian Jones Award recognises and celebrates creativity. The purpose of this award is to encourage and support a young person’s creative expression—in any media—, which has contributed to, or contributes to, the cultural life and /or identity of Indigo Shire.
The theme for 2023 is: reflecting the past and present life in your community.
