We're inviting people with lived experience of disability, and their support people, to help us review accessibility at the Burke Museum in Beechworth.

By sharing your experience and insights, you'll help us better understand how people access and experience the museum, what barriers may exist, and what accessibility needs are important to our community.

About the review

We are committed to understanding and improving accessibility across our community facilities.

As part of this review, participants will take part in a guided accessibility audit of the Burke Museum, using checklists designed specifically to assess access and inclusion. Together, we'll explore the museum and gather feedback about the visitor experience.

We encourage participation from people with a range of lived experiences, including:

  • Physical disability
  • Sensory disability
  • Intellectual disability
  • Cognitive disability
  • Neurodivergence
  • Psychosocial disability

Carers, support workers, family members and other support people are also welcome to participate.

What we want to know

We're interested in understanding what it's like to access and experience the museum, including:

  • Getting from outside the museum to each internal space
  • Moving throughout the building
  • Accessing exhibits and information
  • Sensory considerations such as noise, lighting and crowding
  • Anything that makes it difficult to fully enjoy the museum, inside or out

The findings from this review will help us better understand community accessibility needs and identify opportunities for future improvements.

Please note that this review is intended to assess current accessibility and community needs. Any future improvements would be subject to available funding, approvals and further planning.

Get involved

Join us for a guided accessibility review of the Burke Museum on Monday 23 November, from 1pm to 2.30pm.

Accessible parking is available in the adjacent car park (off Loch Street), with a step-free entrance at the rear of the building. An accessible toilet is also available nearby.

Please RSVP on 03 5728 8079 or info@indigoshire.vic.gov.au by Friday 20 November and let us know about any access requirements and we'll do our best to accommodate them.

We encourage participants to attend the museum review to help inform their feedback. However, if you're unable to attend in person and would still like to share your thoughts on accessibility at the museum, you can still participate by:

  • emailing us at info@indigoshire.vic.gov.au
  • calling our Community Development Officer, Kate O'Toole, on 03 5728 8079
  • requesting a one-on-one review of the museum with Kate

Submissions for feedback will close on Sunday 13 December 2026.
