The Barnawartha Recreation Reserve will soon benefit from a major lighting upgrade with new energy-efficient LED floodlights to improve safety, access and participation in local sport and recreation.

The project has received $250,000 in funding through the 2024-25 Country Football and Netball Program, with additional contributions from Council and the Barnawartha Football Netball Club (BFNC).

Why is this project being undertaken?

The Barnawartha Oval Lighting Upgrade was identified as a priority action in the Active Indigo Strategy 2018-2026 and is a key project supporting community recreation in Barnawartha.

Since adoption of the Strategy, Council has worked closely with the BFNC, Barnawartha Recreation Reserve Committee of Management and other key user groups to support participation in local sport.

The new lighting system will provide 100 lux illumination which will enable the Football Netball Club to host twilight matches and increased programming opportunities at the reserve.

The works will include:

  • Removal of outdated lighting infrastructure

  • Installation of four 30-metre-high galvanised steel floodlight poles

  • New cross members fitted with LED light fixtures to ensure even lighting

  • Underground trenching of electrical cables and installation of safety conduit

  • Connection of lighting system to a new control switchboard in the existing clubrooms

  • Use of baffles to direct light and prevent light spill beyond the sports field
