Project background

Rutherglen's Barkly Park is a valued community space that provides important infrastructure and facilities for sport, recreation and social events.

While owned and managed by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Council recognises the social and physical benefits the facility provides for the Rutherglen community. Upgrading the facility, especially to cater for greater female participation has been a priority project for the Committee of Management. In July 2022, Council applied for funding under the State Government's Local Sports Infrastructure Fund to upgrade the change rooms to female friendly standards. This application was unsuccessful.

During the 2022 election campaign, both major parties pledged funding to upgrade the facilities and with the Labor Government returned, $1M was confirmed, with Council also agreeing to contribute $400K to the project.

However, a Council-facilitated Masterplan for the site, including project scope and costs, was required of the funding. Following extensive community consultation to inform the 10–15-year plan, the Masterplan was completed in 2024.

What is happening and when?

We are currently working with the Barkly Park Committee of Management and the park's user groups, including the Rutherglen Football and Netball Club, Rutherglen United Cricket Club and Rutherglen Auskick organisers, to refine the scope of the project.
