About this project

Council has over 469 kilometres of sealed roads to maintain and funds an annual renewal program to resurface a small proportion of this urban and rural network. This program is predominately developed by reviewing the condition and age of sections of road, but also for improved amenity within the streetscape.

Why was this project undertaken?

As a road surface ages, the bitumen within it becomes brittle and can crack or lose its ability to hold onto the stone aggregate surface. This leads to water penetrating the underlying structure of the road which can cause more major failures like potholes. So, while your road or street might look to be in serviceable condition, by the time of resurfacing it is likely reaching this point of brittleness and may soon begin to fail. Most sealed roads are resurfaced once every 15-25 years, varying according to a wide variety of factors.

What happened and when?

Works commenced in late October 2024 and were completed by mid-December 2024.

The roads included in this year's program were as follows:

We’ve completed a reseal of part of Williams Street in Beechworth.

The section between Ford Street and Loch Steet has been upgraded with a river gravel shoulder, providing a more attractive road surface which compliments the heritage surrounds.

The lighter colour stone also helps reduce urban heat and will be progressively rolled out as part of our annual reseal program.

Works to resurface parts of our sealed road network will begin on Monday, starting with a section of Back Creek Road on the outskirts of Yackandandah.

Several sites around Yackandandah and Beechworth will be spray sealed next week, with works around Chiltern and Rutherglen to be completed in a few weeks.

Please be aware that there will be some minor delays while works progress and be mindful of the changed conditions and loose stones as the new seal settles in.
